Mach 2 Magic

Postby F-27pax » Thu Aug 06, 2015 12:14 am

One of the special treats you may see if you come to the MoB Display Day this coming year will be a special tribute display to M Palix, the owner and kit maker in France of Mach 2. It is widely known that Mach 2 kits are almost impossible to make but members of the Modellers of Ballarat who happen to have Mach 2 kits in their collections are pledged to make at least some of them before our next display.

Being keen on French aeroplanes I have quite a few Mach 2 kits in my Treasure. I have therefore pulled out some of them to get made before next April and here are the first three of them. In order, a Sud Ouest Trident II, a Sud Ouest Triton and a Leduc 0.21.

Next off the starting blocks is either a Sud Aviation Super Frelon or a Breguet Alize, whichever one looks as though it will casue the lest mental damage to attempt.

Wow, not only one Mach 2 kit, but 3, and to a terrific standard, you are my new hero

My vote for the next one goes to the Aloze, an aircraft that always fascinated me

Just for you Graeme, the Alixe it will be.

Interesting sidelight. I thought that I had two Alize kits, both Mach 2 kits. I discovered, however, that one of them is a 'Mach' kit and the other a 'Mach 2' kit. The 'Mach' kit has two sprues and comes in a plastic bag and the other has one sprue and comes in the standard Mach 2 wide flat box. The moulded parts look identical except that they have been rearranged to fit the new sprue arrangement. There's probably an interesting background story to this change. The Mach kit offered one livery while the Mach 2 offers three versions and there seems to be some option bits in the Mach 2 kit to enable construction of a later version with updated avionics. Choice, choices. And no, I'm not going to make two.

Great work Leigh on what look to be very challenging kits. Very rare topics to see modelled as well.

You're a legend Leigh. ;)

Mach 2 kits are widely disparaged and despised for various reasons, those which you've appeared to have challenged and conquered.

Hi Leigh,
Nice job on some very unusual subject matter!!!!
I have several Mach 2 kits in the stash including a 1:72 Falcon 20, Viscount, and Caravelle. The Viscount and Caravelle look reasonable, but the Falcon 20 looks like an absolute bitch!!!! :?
Your Mach 2 builds are inspirational and encouraging.

Here's another Mach 2 creation ready for viewing. We wanted some big things for the MoB Display Day Mach 2 presentation so I've made this Mach 2 P6M-2. It was something of a challenge, as always, but the worst part of the whole thing is that one of the ejector seats has come loose in the cockpit and I had so much trouble fairing it into the fuselage that I'm not going to tamper with it again. So, please just pretend that you can't see it.

And I haven't forgotten your Alize Graeme. The kit is so old it isn't even a Mach 2 kit, it's just a plain Mach kit. Still, I obviously have nothing better to do with myself on those long winter evenings.

The interiors are, so I see, supposed to be some shade of tan. Does anyone know if this is so, and if it is do they have any pointers as to which shade of tan might be best applied here.
