CAD monkey stuff

Postby Cap'n Wannabe » Sun Mar 08, 2015 11:19 am

Tooling around on my first Sunday off in ages....found an interesting aircraft on the webz, and thought I'd have a crack at it. Anyone care to guess the type?

Just about done....the rego for under the horizontal stab needs to be checked for size, but my printer's decided to pack it in.

Managed to sort the printer out, and decals are good to go. There's a couple of patches of primer on the aircraft - two behind the top of the fuel tank, and a couple underneath the starboard wing tip. Think I'll just mask them off rather than doing decals for them - it'll look a tad more authentic, I think.

The kit is not quite the same as the aircraft I'm doing - it has the full glasshouse type canopy - so there'll be some creative masking of the windows to get her looking right.

And now for some pics..
This is the Bandai 1/48 Super Cub kit. I've painted over the landing light in the wing, and removed the position lights from the wingtips as the real aircraft didn't have them. Also repositioned the tail light from the rear of the fin to the top. The windows will be a little different than the kit, too - the real aircraft has the rounded rear windows rather than the rectangular ones in the kit. A bit of masking will sort that out.
The wing decals were huge, and I had a few issues getting them to settle. Still not quite right, and I'll have to do some touching up. I found Mr Mark Softer was far too aggressive for the decal paper...next time I'll try Micro Sol and Micro Set.

The tailplane decals went on OK, but then, the tailplanes are a relatively flat surface. Oh, and I know the font isn't quite right.. :D

And the obligatory fuselage shot. I used a Tamiya spray bomb for the black, much to my regret. The paint just wouldn't stick to the plastic. In the end, I went over most of it with Vallejo Air black. Seatbelts are 1mm tape painted grey, just to give a bit of contrast. I also drybrushed the cockpit with a darkish grey rather than white so the highlights aren't as stark.
