Lockheed Vega refurb

Postby tor lives » Tue Sep 30, 2014 4:57 pm

Hi folks,
Well....I am at it again!!!
While I am waiting for decals for both the civvie Douglas Skyrocket and civvie Huey Cobra refurb projects, I thought I would make a start on refurbing this old girl.
She is a 1:48?? Lockheed Vega (manufacturer unknown.....maybe the old AMT kit), and given her obvious vintage and frailty she broke-down and cleaned up pretty well.

I want to finish her off as VH-UVK, race # 36, an entrant in the 1934 England to Australia Air Race (yes, another Air Racer....anyone seeing a pattern emerge here :D).
By chance does anyone know what the inside of a Lockheed Vega actually looked like????
And @ Wal, I noticed on AMI you have already built this particular Vega

where did you get the "Lockheed" logos for the tail??
Regards

Hi guys,
Have spent some time on the Vega during my last two days off.
Here is an update:

Cockpit area, cabin floor, bulkheads and passenger/cockpit seats all scratch-built from plasticard.
So far this has been an enjoyable refurb.

I think it's Fred's influence :D
If ya can't buy it....make it.
At least I didn't have to try and replicate the individual seat-back video screens :D

Great work so far Ray! Liking that scratch building! Got a pic of the actual aeroplane you are modelling?

Hi Ray,
Working on the decals for you but there lies a problem..
at what stage of it's life do you wish to model this aeroplane?
If you want to model it as it started the London to Sydney Air RAce, it carried the registration G-ABGK, it didn't get reregged to VH-UVK till it got to OZ.
I am not sure of the colours... I went red but I have seen black, I have modded my decal sheet to have both colours to suit your preference. There are other differences according to the timeline used..
In Oz, VH-UVK did not have spatted slimline wheels, they were unfaired fatties. She did not carry the title "Puck" (I put it on anyway figuring I just couldn't find a pic to support putting it there!) Puck was the nickname of a pilot friend of Horrie Miller who had recently died in a plane crash (from dim dark memory he was an Aid de C to someone in South Australia)

so VH-UVK or G-ABGK?
