Paul's favourite.....a 1/72 Piper Aztec!

Postby Cap'n Wannabe » Sun Aug 13, 2017 11:00 am

Over the last few days, I've been mucking around with the Aurora 1/72 Piper Aztec, which will end up as TAA Sunbird Services VH-TGP. The markings will be done based on the scanned file I have (thanks heaps, Paul!) of the original TAA drawing.

So far, I've filled in the paint guides on one of the fuselage sides. I still have to remove the excess filler from the panel lines, and do the other side. Interestingly (or not) there are only guides on the fuselage. The wings and all other surfaces are devoid of them.

Oh yeah...almost forgot...GGF'd Damo!

With 2 of these in the stash, and a bit of logbook time on an Aztec, I'm in

So I've done a little more work, mostly filling and sanding the fuselage sides, but I also got to squirt some coloured stuff. Here's the cockpit/cabin almost done. On reflection, I think I'll spray the floor a darker shade of blue, then highlight it with the grey. I also have to tone down the gloss, and make seatbelts for all the seats.

Hey mate. While I was out at Tullamarine airport the other morning taking pics of jets, I saw an Aztec out there. I thought of you and I took a hi res pic for you to use as reference for your build. If you click on the pic, it'll take you to Flickr and you can get an even bigger size pic. Enjoy 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

Are you sure that's an Aztec? It looks more like the offspring of a Phantom and a Commodore...

No it's definitely Commodore because if you Google "No 2 HRT Commodore" that exact photo is the first image to be shown.

Done a little more work on the cowpat...I mean Aztec.

Firstly, I repainted the cockpit floor a darker blue, and drybrushed a bit of light gull grey over the top to give a little contrast.

Next, I painted the interior colours - Gunze off white and light gull grey

Finally, the instrument panel in Tamiya semi-gloss black and drybrused Gunze off white.

Now I need to deaden the gloss on the seats, cockpit floor, and interior. The thing is, I'm always having trouble with the Gunze clear coats - they always make the colours run. Normally I thin them with laquer thinners....should I be spraying them neat?

Last night I finished up the cockpit..

The kit has some horrible sink marks in the side windows. Luckily, they're on the inside, so all I have to do is sand them out. Almost done one side.....I hate sanding!
