1/144 DC-1

Here it is, almost completed. The TWA decals set it off nicely. When it's finally finished I get out my
ANA DC-2 and see how they compare.



The model behind it is the Welsh Models HS-125-700, a very nice little kit. I hope this company does some more nice little bizjets.

And here is the finished model. This one didn't want to be built and fought me every step of the way. If something could go wrong it would go wrong and I had to resprary the starboard wing three times because of problems with the decaling. Even after the third go there were problems and it was either declare it finished or toss it in the bin. Anyhow, it looks more like a DC-1 than a DC-10 so I guess that's something to be thankful for.







The point of making a DC-1 was to see how different it was in appearance to a DC-2. The answer is, not much apart from the shorter fuselage. The easiest way to tell the two apart seems to be the intakes on the engines of the DC-2 that weren't on the DC-1



Then I thought, how about a DC-3 as well. After all, what is the point of constant scale if you can't use it to compare aircraft.





Enough of this frivolity. It's not a project that I would recommend, and how many of us really need a model of a DC-1 anyhow. On to some more DC-6s and DC-7s before making the jets.

Outstanding! Sometimes, those models that fight us all the way prove to be the most rewarding builds - if they haven't reached Mach 1 on their way to the nearest hard surface along the way!

Have you read "Fate is the hunter" by Ernest Gann? Good read given your recent builds if you haven't.

That's what I thought from looking at those photos.

Very nice by the way - how many others of the "DC" series have you done in this scale? Be interesting to see the whole "family" even including the MD-11.

FUN FACT: KLM is the only airline to have operated every DC model from the DC-2 to the MD-11!

I've already made the DC series from -1 to -6 so it wouldn't be too much rffort to make the rest. I think I have almost all the kits to make the rest of the DC and MD series of airliners so I may as well do the lot, including most of the DC-8s. Thanks for the info on KLM Douglases. I'll have to get decals for a KLM DC-8. Next off the production line will probably be an Ansett-ANA DC-6B.

Thanks for making the DC-1 possible, Graeme. I hadn't thought about making a DC-4E. Having thought about it for ten seconds, I'm telling you that it's not going to happen. Not even I am that silly. Unless you know of an easy way of doing it, and even then, no thanks. It looks like the set is going to have to remain incomplete.
